March is National Kidney Month, a time to raise awareness about kidney health and chronic kidney disease (CKD). With around 15% of U.S. adults affected by CKD, early detection and education are vital in preventing its progression and associated health risks.

This serious condition affects around 35.5 million people. Often overlooked until symptoms appear, CKD is progressive and can increase one’s risk for serious health complications including heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

Healthcare providers play a key role in managing CKD by encouraging regular screenings, educating patients about the importance of kidney health and advocating for lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, hydration, exercise and avoiding smoking. If the disease progresses, it can lead to further complications, including diabetes, which is the leading cause of kidney disease.
