On January 23, we mark Maternal Health Awareness Day. This observance serves as a reminder of the critical importance of maternal and infant health. Despite advances in healthcare, the United States continues to face high maternal mortality rates, with significant disparities among racial and ethnic groups. Many of these tragedies are preventable through timely care, education and equitable access to resources.

Maternal health affects more than birthing parents – it shapes the well-being of families and communities. Warning signs like severe headaches, chest pain or heavy bleeding should never be ignored. Advocacy for better access to prenatal and postpartum care, especially in underserved areas, is essential to saving lives.

Health Quality Innovators (HQI) is proud to lead the Maryland Perinatal-Neonatal Quality Collaborative (MDPQC). This network of perinatal care providers and public health professionals works to improve health outcomes for birthing people and newborns through continuous quality improvement. The Collaborative provides all Maryland birthing hospitals with educational resources, technical assistance and a platform for communication and sharing of best practices.

Visit the MDPQC website to learn more about our commitment to improving outcomes for parents and babies through collaboration, education and evidence-based practices.
