HQI’s Turning the Tide on Diabetes initiative is taking a fresh, family-focused approach to improving health outcomes across Virginia. In collaboration with the Eastern Shore Community Action Agency (ESCAA), HQI is addressing childhood obesity by implementing and expanding an evidence-based, family-centered intervention.

At the heart of this effort is the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It! (MEND) program, designed for families with children aged 2–5. MEND helps families embrace healthier lifestyles through engaging activities, nutrition education and physical exercise. To encourage participation, families receive milestone-based incentives such as air fryers, slow cookers or fitness gear like resistance bands. To date, more than 15 families have joined the program.

In addition to MEND, the initiative promotes the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) — a vital resource for individuals living with or at risk for type 2 diabetes. The National DPP connects participants with trained lifestyle coaches who provide evidence-based guidance to support daily self-care, reduce complications and improve long-term health. This support is available in healthcare settings, community spaces and online.
